Weathering with You is a Japanese animated romantic fantasy film. The movie is filled with funny lines and poignant one-liners. The film was released in two versions in North America, a subtitled version and a dubbed version.

This movie is from the same creators of Your Name, one of the best-animated movies of the past decade, and the ultimate proof that anime can also provide touching stories full of intensity and emotion. Weathering with You is also a fantasy story with a little bit of romance and drama included.

The main character is Hodaka, a teenage runaway living on the streets of Tokyo and scraping to get by. Two notable things happen in his life – first, he gets a job working for a tabloid journalist, Mr. Suga; second, and more importantly, he meets Hina, a “sunshine girl” capable of manipulating the weather. Given that Toyko is in the midst of a torrential downpour that has lasted for weeks, Hodaka and Hina see an opportunity. They launch a business in which she will make the rain go away for people, for a price. The two bond powerfully, but then Hina’s abilities begin to take a toll.

Dear God, if you exist, please don’t take anything more, and don’t give anything more.” – Hodaka

There are times in our lives when we are fed up with everything. It’s a lot to take in, and anything else is just too much for us to bear. It is during times like these that you need to be strong and have faith.

Dear God, if you exist, I beg you – this is more than enough; we don’t need anything else. We’ll manage somehow. So please, don’t give us anything more, and don’t take anything more from us. Let us be together like this forever.

But everything comes at a price…..

In this world, everything comes with a price; nothing in life comes for free. It’s not always money, but there is a price behind everything. Everything has a cost, and that’s the basic rule of life.

You cannot expect to get anything or anywhere without having to give up anything in return. Even what you receive freely has already been paid for by someone.

Hina really moves my heart – Hokada from Weathering with You

You meet thousands of people, and none of them touch you. Besides, then you meet one person and your life changes forever.

Sometimes, we meet people who conquer our hearts. They move us, they change us, and we become consumed by our love for them. Plus, they eventually help us find a whole new perspective on life.

It all comes down to that one person you think of before you fall asleep, and sometimes they have no idea how much of your heart they hold in their hands.

“What a wonderful world I was born in, I thought.” – Hokada from Weathering with You

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.

One moment you might be despising the world, and the other, this world makes you look at it in wonder and awe. That’s the beauty of this world. There are so many miraculous things that you can find around you. You have to know in which direction you need to look.

“I found it suffocating to live with my parents, and in that town.” – Hokada

I found it suffocating to live with my parents, and in that town.

Sometimes the people whom we’ve known for only a short amount of time have a bigger impact on us than those we’ve known forever.

Sometimes, the people closest to us are the ones who understand us the least, and that is mostly the case with parents. Parents very often hurt us with their strict decisions and intruding attitude. We end up feeling out of place and lonely.

“Messing with nature always has a cost.”

Nature is terrifying. Messing with it comes with its own cost. If you try to dominate nature, it will retaliate; when it does, it can destroy anyone that comes in its way.

Moreover, that’s exactly what Hina and Hodaka had to face as they tried to use Hina’s powers recklessly. Nature is not to be taken lightly.

In Conclusion

The animation was spectacular, I would say the camera work was awesome, but there isn’t camera work, the only animation. However, they manage to include angles and movements that I have never seen before in an animated movie. It was an incredibly well-done job.

When it comes to the story, it was very good. A well-balanced mix between fantasy/drama/romance. The only thing that left me puzzled was so many underaged characters living on their own in Tokyo. This film is no doubt fantastic, but Your Name has a more heartfelt and emotional tale.

If you enjoy animation, especially Japanese animation and the genres I mentioned before, then Weathering with You is a must-watch. I would recommend watching this film.
